  3. Oh shut up. Is there some kind of magical invisible veil that envelops Sikhs and weakens them whenever they cross over into the mystical land of America? Maybe you fellas need to stop acting big in the pind, and stop getting your tatti kicked in when you go to the West?

  4. I have never heard of the cousin relationships in villages either. But don't certain Sikh communities practice cousin-marriages, (although to a far lower extent than Muslims)? I think the Khatri community who came from Pakistan still does them but the paternal cousins can't intermarry, only maternal. It's not common now but a Khatri girl told me about a case in her family which happened many years back, the child sadly passed away due to health complications because the parents were cousins.

  5. I remember watching some documentary about teenage pregnancies out of wedlock in Punjab. I confronted my my mum regarding this and she had to admit that these things have happened. I think the problem is that we live in a debauched western society where all these puttheh kam is out in the open. Our people then have this sense of smug moral superiority and we grow up with the belief that we are morally superior to the goreh and we come from a morally superior community. But when we hear about these things, it creates a cognitive dissonance because it breaks this illusion.

  6. I'm fine. My point was just that people often use (not saying Premi was) examples of tokenism to prove things are improving, like racism is sorted in the US because we've got a black president now. Judging from outside (and I could be wrong) but it actually looks like racism has worsened there and not improved since then. I think it's pretty easy to wheel out some prominent member of a discriminated against community to try and deflect from ground level realities for the majority. All in all though, I'm glad at least some brothers are overtly facing up to what is essentially modern day slavery and exploitation in Panjab. Waheguru bless those people. What makes me heave is how we have so many people in the diaspora (and they all seem to be from a certain background) constantly harking about how much progress has been made, and how things aren't like they used to be. That sort of dismissive attitude just enables further covert abuse in my opinion. How long has this issue been buried by apnay? It's high time to take it on - head on. And we have to face ugly realities to do this, regardless if they make you emotionally feel 'bad'.

  8. Akaal Takht Jathedar is from a ‘low caste’ Same with recent ex-Chief Minister Channi. There have been quotas in place for many years to ensure ‘lower castes’ get many reserved political seats and (from my understanding) the same with senior Religious positions. Same for government jobs and university places in general. You have made a topic and points here which are quite inaccurate and misleading

  9. People think offering toy aeroplanes will "assure" them a visa! http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/aeroplane-gurdwara/998924/ Aeroplane Gurdwara Anju Agnihotri Chaba , Anju Agnihotri Chaba : New Delhi, Sat Sep 08 2012, 22:25 It's not difficult to locate Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara in Talhan village near Jalandhar on NH-1. Just ask for the "hawai jahaz gurdwara" or the "aeroplane gurdwara", and you'll be promptly guided to it... Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara, or the hawai jahaz gurdwara, is a ticket to the West; if you offer a toy aeroplane there as prasad, you can be "assured" of a visa. Or so, believe devotees who flock to the shrine with miniature aircraft as offerings, from across Punjab's Doaba region, which consists of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr districts, and which has over six million of its natives settled abroad. It is believed that every family in Doaba has at least one member living overseas. The gate to Talhan village has a cement model of a British Airways aircraft sitting on top of it, and the road to Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara is lined with shops selling toy models of international carriers such as Lufthansa, British Airways, Air Canada, etc, priced between Rs 50 and Rs 550.

  11. The real figure of Sikhs in East Punjab (practising or not) today is definitely below 50%. There are many things going behind the scenes, the recent declaration by the Jathedar is a sign that panthic leaders are realizing the grave situation we have landed ourselves into without realizing (once again proving the anecdote with differing approaches to a coming storm by the foresighted Hindu, the adapting scheming Muslim and the dimwitted Sikh). Doaba will be the first region where Sikhs will be reduced to a minority below 30% of the population, this will be a first for a district in Modern Punjab. (Barring the exception of newly formed districts like Fazilka who were earlier part of Sikh majority districts). The lower the numbers in a district, the lesser political power and the more chances of religious repression. The Christian conversion is a problem all over Punjab but specifically the border belt, and more so Amritsar/Tarn Taran region rather than the Gurdaspur region which was mentioned in the earlier posts. The Gurdaspur Christian community is historically older (see older census) and not solely related to the new massive Christian missionary campaign in Punjab. It will be interesting to note if (all) Gujjars and other Muslim migrants who have settled (semi) permanently in Punjab are taken into consideration in these census. The combined percentage of Abrahamics (Christians and Muslims) is definitely 10% today in Punjab - a worrying figure. You are already seeing these religions clash with the others in the past 5 to 10 years - these things were unheard of in the 60s 70s 80s and even 90s. "Though Muslims share in the total population of Punjab still remains very low, the number of Muslims in Punjab has multiplied by six times in the five decades since 1961, while the total population has multiplied by a factor of 2.5. In 1961, the proportion of Muslims in the state population was only 0.80 percent; it has grown to 1.93 percent in 2011." Another thing you'll note is how the bottom 5 districts literacy wise are in the top 10 districts with the highest Sikh percentage. Sikhs need to focus on religious and worldly education to combat all obstacles the nation is facing. Akaal Sahai.

  26. Ok so I just got back from watching Chaar Sahibzaade. I must admit I am at a loss of words for this movie. The only thing I'd want to say about the makers is no one has any idea how many sins of their they possibly have had forgiven in Akal Purakh's dargah by hitting so many people's hearts with such a level of bairaag. People usually end up in tears when they watch anything emotional on TV. It may surprise you but in India its a fact that several women addicted to the Indian soap operas shed tears when they see any emotional sequence. But this wasn't a fake Indian soap opera, this is our history. Its impact had to be much more stronger and it obviously was. Amazing job and I hope they make many more. For all times to come these masterpieces will preserve our history in a manner that will appeal to individuals of all ages.

  29. Problem is parents who FEEL Gurmukhi is a hurdle and try hard NOT to speak Maa Boli to their children and grandchildren , usually it is the patit lot who want to be 'modern' , you can live in the current times and have strength to face it with knowing exactly where you come from how many people sacrificed to get you here , how much your dharam can give you that your folks can not. I agree that patits don't want their kids to know because the kids will question every wrong they can see, my kids did it in the past and still do it now it is natural and right for them to hold Gurmatta above duniya di rasma, they will judge using gurmat bibek if something is right for them or wrong when on their own, I'm glad I could help them at least that much.

  30. the main hurdel is gurmukhi you have to create an environment to talk comepletely in native language at home , learn, read write in it no wonder kids find it easier to read in english . once they are accustomed and habitual and comfortable to read in gurmukhi , it would be better

  31. Most of the so called Sikhs are Patits who are either not interested to tell our glorious history to their children or too ashamed to do so because of their patitpuna. So how can we expect their children to know our history? The results are very clearly seen with the younger generation having no knowledge of the basics of Sikhi. This came out clearly in the open when recently Nikki Haley said, "Christianity spoke to me that I could understand it." I strongly believe it was a more of her parents who did not speak to her about Sikhi for the reasons cited above. No wonder, how could she understand when no one spoke to her about Sikhi.

  32. Agreed definitely one to buy on bluray/DVD and give out as gifts. I watched Sikh channel show on Sunday night where they were interviewing people at star city Birmingham before and after they watched the movie. The shocking thing was that many youth admitted before watching the film they didnt know the story of the chaar sahibzade before watching the film. Some of these people were in there late teens and maybe 20's.Some young girls etc.. What have their parents been doing all this time ?? Obviously failing to teach their kids any Sikh history. No wonder we have issues with interfaith marriages, rejection of Sikhi image etc..We have been raising a whitewashed generation devoid of any Sikhi knowledge...

  33. For those who have seen the movie Despite knowing the history and being a young adult I still got a lot from the movie despite noticing the glaring historical inaccuracies. This wasn't a historical documentary, but a movie depicting actual historical events so I tried not to focus objectively. When will this be released to blu-ray and DVD? I will buy multiple copies and give them out as gifts.

  34. Gatka is not referred to in any historical texts or puratan granths. Sit down and watch gatka practioners and notice what they are actually doing..ask them why their weaponary is all over length, the wrong weight and utilised in the wrong manner. They also have no concept of unarmed combat , weapons disarming etc. Why do they perform circus tricks like chopping up melons etc blindfolded ? These are just entertainments to please crowds. There are no well known martial artists anywhere in the world that endorse or recognise gatka as a combat art. It is a very great discredit to try and suggest the combat arts of puratan Singh's were anything like the circus acts of gatka practioners.

  35. Went to watch yesterday. Brilliantly done very emotional, had tears in my eyes and the end of the movie. The graphics are excellent, its done properly. One point about the accuracy of the movie, I have been listening to SIkhs2Inspire and Chamkaur di Garrhi -if anyone hasn't listened to this its definitely worth it. There they explain how the Shaheedi of Baba Ajit Singh Ji and Baba Jujhar Singh Ji was with cannons being fired at them and their bodies literally disappearing not the way it was in the movie. Also both Sahibzade slayed thousands of mughals not 10s or 20s and the only way to stop them was by aiming all cannons towards them and firing them all at once. Also another part that they didn't add was how Guru Gobind Singh Ji was firing arrows that were killing 10 mughals at a time, and one arrow Guruji shot killed 1000 men. I'm not knocking the movie or putting it down in anyway, like i said before the movie was great and definitely worth the watch,

  36. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Chalo, as everyone is going reviews... :biggrin2: Went with 30 or so Sangat and family for the 3D. Every show is getting sold out and had to get to the theater about 45 minutes early to get a seat (a lot of saving of the seats was going on). The theater employees are very aware that this movie is attracting a lot of viewers and have had to modify their showing methods (converting non 3D viewings and now looking at booking larger theater rooms) to accomodate the influx of viewers. The cinema staff say that this movie will be running at least for 3-4 weeks - it is profitable and very much popular among the viewers. I am saying this as a California resident. The movie is the highest production value animated movie that relates to Sikh history. Vismaad had done an excellent seva in starting this initiative and the trek into 3D is a very welcome evolution. This movie is an absolute must for all, especially those who know nothing about Sikhi. It presents the story as lucidly and cohesively as possible in the time frame alloted. It is a challenge for the makers of this movie, because what they are attempting to show in 2 hours could take up volumes of history books. They openly provided the disclaimer that artistic license was taken to enhance the story telling. That cannot be underscored. Anyone who is familiar with Sikh history will see inaccuracies with certain things: A) Mata Gujri's portrayal as a weak grandmother - this has been covered here already. She is the wife of the Ninth Master, Mother of the Tenth Master and Grandmother to Shaheed Sahibzadae - a woman who had seen three generations pass before her, multiple conflicts and tragedies and was of the highest caliber of Sikhi - she would not be an emotional weakling, to say the least. B) Sahibzadae Ajit Singh and Jujhar Singh Ji were, per historical accounts, able to slay hundreds of the enemy in Chamkaur Sahib battle, not the tens as shown (this could be an animation cost and effort issue). C) Emotional portrayal - would the Guru's family become so emotional over separation and imminent Shaheedi? If Gursikhs from the 1984 movement were able to do jaikarae and celebrate their family members' Shaheedian, then the Guru's family could be no less. These seem to have been done to make a more human connection with the viewer, but portraying them all true to character would not have been any less impactful. Apart from the few issues noted above, the overall effort is EXCELLENT - and truly, these are growing pains. I am writing this as constructive criticism must go hand in hand with accolade to make the next effort more successful and acurate. The makers of the movie deserve to profit massively from this creation and should be encouraged to make a movie on all of Sikh history, enhancing production values as they continue their efforts. The movie media is something that can deliver hundreds of pages of history in a compressed time format to a universal audience with dubbing/captioning that books are unable to do. These are our history come to life, and the Sikh Panth needs to encourage, fund, and promote these initiatives. We need to get to Lord of the Rings type production values and scope/exposure to bring our history to the masses. It cannot be underscored the power of the media - the independence movement of Scotland in modern times owes at least part of its roots to Braveheart. We as a community need to capitalize on this media power.

  37. Went yesterday with the kids , excellent movie could have watched more... the full range of emotions was felt by the audience, even the small group of people watching joined in with jaikarey made the half-filled room seem full . The little one Isher Kaur was so enthralled , every time Guru ji's picture would come on screen she would exclaim 'it's Waheguru ji' I gently reminded her that it is Guru Gobind Singh ji but in a way my heart was happy she understood enough of what was going on. She was impressed with Ajit Singh ji and Jujhar Singh jis' bravery and skills kept smiling and saying wow. Everyone was so involved in the storyline they didn't want to leave the room at the intermission, Bahadur Singh was so affected by the loss of Ajit Singh ji and Jujhar SIngh he didn't want to see the second half because he knew what was to come... his heart was totally with the Sahibzahidey. It is not a surprise to me that he feels that way, when he actually went to chotte sahibzahidey di shaheedi asthaan when he was small (6) with his two brothers both he and his twin Dayal Singh felt the injustice and loss deeply, they came out of Gurdwara Sahib exclaiming that they will grow up and kill all the muslims, obviously I gently explained that Gursikhs fight evil not muslims and those responsible were already long gone after getting punished. Again this film touched his soul the same way and he was in tumult of emotions and thoughts at the end of the movie. Dayal Singh also felt this movie but seemed to understand that although they are physically not here, they are always here so although felt sadness wanted to know how the evildoers were dealt with and by whom so it was good in that he wanted to know more of sikhi itihaas. My eldest Jaspreet Singh is in a funny mental space at the moment and even he connected with the story and the way it was told... All in all I would say you will go and never feel you have not connected from your hirdey to this film. The songs were few but very touching, and the dialogues also. The fight scenes were bloodless so little ones will understand people are dying /getting hurt without scaring them. The animation sometimes goes out of sync with the dialogue and some aspects of the animation could have been improved but those things were minor because the subject matter was so intense. Take your kids, your bajurg, your neighbours , everyone they will all benefit.

  39. Chaar Sahibzaade 3D Punjabi Movie Review Writing a review for movies like “Chaar Sahibzaade” is really tough. It is difficult to give expressions to some things in life. And reviewing this movie is no less than herculean task. “Chaar Sahibzaade” the epic saga of the sacrifices of the four sons (Sahibzaade) of Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji – the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, is one of the most historic blunders of the Mughal rulers of the times. The film tells the story of the supreme sacrifice of the four sons (Chaar Sahibzaade) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It begins with the still of the first Sikh guru Nanak with rich and resonating voice over of Om Puri informing us about how he talked about the atrocities perpetrated by Babar to forcibly convert non-Muslims to his faith. The Voice Over (VO) goes on to describe, supported by stills, as to how Kashmiri Pandits approached the 9th Guru of the panth Guru Tegh Bahadur to save them from forced conversion and how he stood up for them, challenging the Mughal emperor that if he could convert him, the whole of India would take to Islam. He sacrificed his life for his convictions. He was beheaded in Delhi on the orders of Aurangzeb, the then Mughal emperor. We get to know about Guru Gobind Singh taking over as the 10th Sikh guru with his headquarters at Anandpur Sahib. The animated story begins. The sons (sahibzaade) of the Guru are being groomed as warriors, scholars, and Shabad singers. The movie has very powerfully represented the animation character of Dhan Guru Gobind Singh. Though no one can even imagine even the slightest pinch of the glorification of our Gurus, but it was a very respectable and first hand approach of the movie director to show the glimpse of Parkash of Guru Gobind Singh ji. Personally speaking, I was not even able to face the animated character of Guru Gobind Singh ji in the movie itself, and the whole day and night after watching the movie, I kept thinking and thinking the Parkash of our Gurus, that is lightening the whole universe. Though the filmmakers and the writers try to soften the hard-hitting edges of the historical narrative, they do not camouflage the fact that Mughal rulers used barbaric coercive methods to convert people to Islam and they were intolerant to all other faiths in similar ways as ISIS is today. It’s the content of the film and its message that matter here and not the form. The film uses basic low-end animation technique. It’s not a great technological feat in view of the kinds of advances that have been made in this field. Nevertheless, it’s an engaging and moving drama. There were some facts though, which seemed to be distorted in the movie but that still does not give a major setback to the movie compared to the positive side effects. The movie shows ‘Khanda’ insignia on the dastars of Sahibzaades and other Singhs picturised in the movie, whereas historically the ‘Khanda’ symbol originated long after the Guruship period. I do not wish to criticize, however I look at the portrayal of Mata Gujri ji. In reality, Mata Gurjri ji was a warrior queen. She wore a proud dastaar, along with Sahib Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, she spent decades in Bhagti. Like Mata Bhag Kaur ji, she also led Khalsa forces into battle from a young age. She was never weak or emotional, despite elderly she was antaryami, full of bhagti and bir rass. Also remembering my childhood stories read from some historical books and listening to some old Dhadi vaars, there was a mention that when the Jalads who were building the bricked wall to execute Chhote Sahibzaade. The book stated that during the construction of the wall nearby the knee of Sahibzaade, it started getting bit slanted and the Jalads tried to break the brick then the youngest Sahibzaada Baba Fateh Singh ji warned the jalads saying that, “Sade Gode Di Chappni Nu Shil De par Ett Na Todi, Tutti Hoi Ett Sikhi De Mahalla Nu Nahi Laga Kardi “. I feel speechless on remembering these words…and was awaiting for this scene onto the screen, however it was missed by the story writer. In the end, My hearty kudos and gratitude to the filmmakers, for giving us a film that tells us about our glorious historical struggle to save our pluralist culture from the murderous Islamist onslaught so truthfully and boldly. More films like these should be made. What we need is to work a little harder with higher technical benchmarks. Our history has thousands of stories like BRAVEHEART if we care to leaf through its pages. We also have the technical resources to make world-class films. I wish more and more people watch this film for its message. I’m disregarding its serious technical and artistic flaws and giving it a high score hoping it prompts you to watch it. Its a great master piece tool to educate our upcoming generations. http://singhstation.net/2014/11/chaar-sahibzaade-3d-punjabi-movie-review/

  40. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH Sold out in our area yesterday. At least 50+ Sangat was standing outside the theater, unable to get in. And were HAPPY that a positive initiative was receiving the Sangat's money and would encourage more movies like this. The 3D had such demand, that the theater had to convert the regular showing into 3D to meet demand. There is a LOT of ticket sale for this movie. Booked 30 tickets for today's showing in 3D with our local Sangat and found out while getting tickets that that showing was sold out after getting our tickets. Showing a representation of Guru Sahib's face - it is a tightrope all of the time - how much you can show, how much animation you can do, whether you should do any face at all - advantages and disadvantages to both. The static face was probably the safe bet - otherwise, opposition to the movie could be overwhelming and then we have no movie. Bhai Sukhvinder Singh from Vismaad stated that when he made the movie Sahibzadae, he was reported to the Akaal Takht Sahib and demonstrations were planned outside theaters. When he questioned whether the protesters or opponents had seen the movie, they said no. He told them to at least watch the movie - they did and retracted their opposition. An unenviable position to be sure and something to appreciate as to the precarious nature of religious film productions.

  41. This movie is turning into a revolution. I haven't seen it yet, but the reactions of people to this movie would bring you to tears. Young Sikhs who do not keep Sikhi saroop are pledging that they are going to stop doing beadbi of their kes. Little kids in tears are vowing never to waver from the path of Sikhi. And on a few instances I even saw Hindus posting on Facebook that after watching this movie they have every intention to embrace Sikhi. Even Bollywood stars such as Shilpa Shetty and some others have heavily appreciated this movie.
